About
The early 1960’s saw suburban expansion in South St. Louis County, and leadership among three large congregations (St. John, St. Paul and St. Lucas) saw opportunity for a new United Church of Christ church start. Rev. Richard Brueseke, Prince of Peace’s founding pastor, visited several hundred homes in the area nearby what is now Prince of Peace. A series of cottage meetings prepared the way for the congregation’s first worship service at Washington Elementary School on Kerth and Butler Hill Roads on November 3, 1963. Forty—eight individuals comprised the congregation’s founding membership.
The next two decades were a time of growth for Prince of Peace. It completed its sanctuary building in time for the first worship service at the present site in May 1967, and completion of the current parish hall followed in 1977. As the church arrived at its 20th anniversary, the church membership swelled to 400 members.
Through all the seasons of life at Prince of Peace, the inspiration of The Way of Jesus Christ has consistently inspired the congregation to many local dimensions of charitable ministry. From breakfast preparation through the Epiphany UCC breakfast ministry to ongoing financial and in-kind support with some of our denomination’s local ministry centers, the grace of Jesus Christ has animated the life of Prince of Peace through the years to share kindness and love with others as God in Jesus has first shared love with us.
